I left the earlier review on this about a strange note in it

I ordered it in several formats, and fell in love with the straight perfume oil immediately. The strange note is gone. It smells like a luxurious, high end fragrance, very pure and refined. When it changes, there is a dry woody tang that I also love. It doesn't quite have the longevity I expected (the change comes fairly soon) but by layering different products you can extend that some, I imagine. I first fell for the Cologne scent, but this smells more pure and somehow stronger than Cologne. If you were feeling experimental you could try mixing and layering both together.

This was a sample I tried

I remember sniffing 4711 years ago, and being none too impressed with it. But noses change, and perception of scent does too, with aging. Probably smell less of everything now, but the smelling is still a pleasure. However, there was within this oil an unpleasant wash of an odor-something unclean, moldy, strange- probably just my olfactory acting up, probably not the scent itself. I will wait a while and test it some more, I still have plenty of oil left in the sample. It was very similar to the Cologne (aka Thierry Mugler C) I recently purchased, so I thought they might reinforce each other, which they do- except for that slight discomfiting odor I detected in the 4711..maybe it just doesn't get along with my natural scent or something. But experimenting is so much fun, isn't it?

    Perfect version

What can one say about perfection? This is exactly as I remember this fragrance,so very fresh. My late husband wore it for years, together with Dior's Eau Sauvage (which TFS has duplicated also perfectly). Although the smell is the same, the TFS version has an advantage over the original: it lasts much longer than the fleeting 4711. It might be a legend, but it is said that this was Napoleon's eau de cologne, and that he needed large quantities of it daily. If true he was a man of good taste who would have saved lots of cologne if this oil would have been available then.
